In my opinion, 90% of all corruption in Washington, DC can be eliminated by:
- Term Limits
- Elimination of Re-elections
- Pensions
I will gather a convention of states to ratify an amendment to the US Constitution imposing:
Term Limits
President of the United States
- One 6-year term
- Cannot be re-elected
- Receives a $1,000,000 per year pension for life, but is legally forbidden to have any other income sources for the rest of his/her life
US Senate
- One 8-year term
- Cannot be re-elected
- Receives a $750,000 per year pension for life, but is legally forbidden to have any other income sources for the rest of his/her life
US House of Representatives
- One 6-year term
- Cannot be re-elected
- Receives a $500,000 per year pension for life, but is legally forbidden to have any other income sources for the rest of his/her life
US Supreme Court
- One 20-year term
- Cannot be re-elected
- Receives a $500,000 per year pension for life, but is legally forbidden to have any other income sources for the rest of his/her life
Whoa, whoa, whoa .... you had me until "huge lifetime pension."
I get it. The concept doesn't feel right. After all, we hate politicians.
However, the greatest corruption is caused when politicians leave office and then sell their access to the highest bidder as a lobbyist or talking head.
Yes, it will cost us a few billion dollars a year. Yes, we will have some real jerks getting fat pensions.
But at least they can't hurt us anymore....
Anti-lobbying Provision
As part of the amendment, any staffer who spends 90 days or more working for a President, Senator, House Member, or Supreme Court is forbidden to work as a lobbyist for 5 years after final date of employment.
