All new education spending will be funded by:
Just days ago, three Republicans voted to refuse federal funding which would have cost Utah taxpayers $0 but provided free meals to 16,000 children.
This is unacceptable.
I will introduce bills to provide free school breakfast and lunch to all children attending schools in districts where the median household income is less than 60% the state average, or where the household earns 125% or less of the state poverty line.
I will introduce a bill to assist Utah residents with savings toward in-state colleges and universities.
For any high school graduate who works for one year before enrolling in a state college or university:
- Utah will provide a matching grant in the amount of 20% of the documented W-2 earnings of that student.
- Can be applied toward any in-state college, university, or approved trade school
Example: Student graduates high school and spends 12 months working for $12/hour at a car dealership, earning $24,960. The state would provide a one-time grant in the amount of $4,992 to be applied to an in-state college, university, or trade school.
I will introduce a bill to remove state funding from any college which does not cap annual tuition increases to 20% the rate of inflation, or 1%, whichever is less.
I will introduce a bill banning any state-funded college from requiring textbooks which cost more than $40.
